01 · Where we started
A smallholding that was never meant to be a business
My grandparents bought the land to get out of Los Angeles, not to farm it commercially. The first box scheme started in 1979 because they had grown far more than two people could eat, and it has run every week since.
02 · How we farm
No-dig beds and very long rotations
We stopped ploughing in 2009 and spent six years rebuilding soil that took a generation to wear out. Yields dipped for four seasons and have been climbing ever since. Nothing here is certified organic; everything here is grown as if it were.
03 · Where it goes
Two hundred households and four kitchens
We sell direct or not at all. Around two hundred boxes go out each Thursday and four restaurants take whatever is best that week rather than ordering from a list. There is no wholesale and there never has been.
We are not trying to feed a city, and we have turned down every offer to scale that would have meant farming land we cannot walk. Forty acres is the amount of ground one family can actually know.
